VIRB XE Time-Lapse Photos

VIRB XE Time-Lapse Photos

Berichtdoor ankeric » 21 dec 2017 20:27

VIRB XE Images:
  • Time-Lapse Photos
  • or: 1 image per 0,5 second
  • or: 1 image per 2 seconds
  • VIRB determines the - correct / incorrect - exposure once every 32-36 Images

The outcome is very unsatisfactory.

Scroll down in the images below to see the successive differences in exposure...

Off topic: video quality is reasonable to good.

Also on Mapillary forum Garmin VIRB XE is being qualified as "bad": garmin-virb-xe-is-bad

Dark images!

Inconsistent!

Following two images are made within one second, identical lighting conditions.

Trying to understand, see Mapillary sequences:

Car, 1 image / 0,5 second, up-side-down
Exposure for most (not all) images has been manually corrected by +2 eV. (or even: +3 eV.)

Foot, 1 image / 2 seconds, up-side-up
Walking in a dark forest, exposure was fair, sometimes even good.

Car, 1 image / 0,5 second, up-side-down
Twilight, tunnels, inner city, tall buildings. Exposure was fair. Low contrast thanks to twilight?

Bicycle, 1 image / 1 second, up-side-up
Exposure was good.

Pointing the camera downward (to avoid sky lights) is not good idea in a car because of the dashboard being visible in the image. Pointing 20 degrees upward does resolve and does give good exposure in good lighting conditions. At least for some or even most pictures.
Bicycle is always aiming straight forward and (almost?) always oké. Is there a difference between bicycle and car?

Image frequency might be relevant.
Car speed might be relevant. Changing conditions are a culprit.
Bicycle (1 image / second) and Foot sequences (1 images / 2 seconds) are oké if (...) light conditions are oké.
But also: bicycle images are more often correct than foot images. Shaking head during hiking effects exposure?
Bicycle images become blurred in low light conditions. Even at a speed of 15 km/h.

Constrast seems like an issue.
If there is a (small) high light somewhere in the images, the complete images may be too dark.

Overexposure contains more information in a photo and is therefore preferred over underexposure.

Garmin Virb XE Video mode does offer "Professional Settings":
White balance, exposure correction (EV Bias), fixed exposure (EV Lock), ISO limit.
Why Video mode only?
Or does Video mode "Professional Settings" also apply to Photo's? Just another Garmin User Interface stupidity?
But also: even EV Bias does not resolve since exposure goes over, good, under, under, good.
And how to decide on EV Lock? By Virb App preview? No way...

My advise: don't use a Garmin VIRB XE for Mapillary. Never! Unless for video mode.

During my last trip to South Africa, only 6 of the 300,000 photos were good enough for the photo album. The rest was disqualified and Mapillary only ...
