Introducing BaseCamp™: Garmin’s® New Tool For Planning and Reviewing All of Your Outdoor Adventures

OLATHE, Kan./January 14, 2009/Business Wire — Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation, announced today the introduction of Garmin BaseCamp – a utility that allows users to plan and manage trips, routes, tracks, and waypoints and transfer them between the computer and applicable Garmin outdoor handheld device.

“BaseCamp brings a whole new set of features to hikers, hunters, geocachers, and anyone else who wants to maximize their experience with their Garmin GPS,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. “This new utility lets users view, organize, and transfer their data more quickly and efficiently – allowing them to make the most of their time exploring the great outdoors.”

BaseCamp lets users view both 24K and 100K topo maps in 2D or 3D renderings. Users no longer are confined with a “north up” map – it can be rotated to any orientation. Another convenient window depicts the elevation profile currently displayed. And with Track Draw, users can trace a fluid track and get an immediate elevation profile to determine the difficulty of their hike.

Because a picture is worth a thousand words, BaseCamp supports geotagging of user-generated photos, to know exactly what the scenery is like at any given location – simply click on a map icon to view an enlarged version of a photo. Users can even view their data in Google Earth. The growing legions of Geocachers will also find utility in BaseCamp – the utility fully supports all of the information presented on geocaching.com.

Whether you’re planning an adventure or returning home from one, BaseCamp allows the complete transfer of maps, waypoints, routes, and geotagged photos back and forth between the utility and the applicable Garmin outdoor handheld device. Users can compile their information into easily-identifiable folders as well, for later retrieval. As a backup, BaseCamp can print out configurable, full-page, color maps for viewing at any time.

BaseCamp is compatible on both PC and Mac computers. Beginning in the first quarter of 2009, the utility will ship with all new TOPO U.S. 24K DVD and TOPO U.S. 100K DVD products. Het lijkt op een soort upgrade van Trip&Waypoint manager en dan voor Windows en Mac tegelijk uitgebracht. Nu weten we ook wat het vervolg project van het Roadtrip team is geworden.

Verder zie je steeds meer 3D topo kaarten verschijnen en is dit het programma op de PC/Mac om deze 3D Garmin Topokaarten ook op de computer te kunnen gebruiken.

Tis alleen nog maar de vraag of en wanneer bv de Europese Topo makers hier wat mee gaan doen.
En zou BaseCamp ook 2D kaarten aankunnen (na conversie naar 2009 kaartmateriaal formaat)?

Er zijn toch al EU topo's met 3D informatie? Ik meen in ieder geval de Duitse. Als je daarop in MapSource een track uitzet, kun je het hoogteprofiel zien.

Is de spaanse dan ook inhoudelijk verbeterd? Want bij de oude had je meer aan CN dan aan de Topo.

Let op.

Je moet wel mapsource reeds geinstalleerd hebben.
Ook moet je 3D (DEM ) kaarten hebben geinstalleerd.

Enkele voorbeelden van DEM kaarten zijn:

* Topo BE
* Topo CH
* Topo IT
* Fiets en wandel Belgie

Met deze kaarten kan je nu ook 3D op de pc bekijken.

.NET framework 2.0 is required and will be installed if needed.

Voor de windows versie is dit een voorwaarde, klinkt niet veelbelovend dan voor de Mac versie.

Dat deze versie niet op de Mac draait snap ik ook wel. Maar in het persbericht wat jij ook quootte staat het volgende:

Grappig,

- tracks bewerken (met elastiekjes methode a la Mac)
- geen mogelijkheid om een route te wijzigen
- wel mogelijkheid om filtered route te wijzigen (= directe route)
- 2d. 3d en overzichtskaart
- Nalopen/vliegen (simuleren) met max 100x de snelheid (vele stappen)
- Gegevens opslag zoals in Trainings Center (1 database) en Mappen zoals op Mac.
- Import van Gdb, Loc, Gpx en Mps formaten.
- Geotag foto's met Track
- Kent als nieuw item (om te maken) Waypoint, Route, Filtered Route en Track
- Kaartenbeheer zoals in Mapsource 6.14 en hoger
- Zoeken zoals in RoadTrip op de Mac, alleen dan veel sneller
- Taal instellen is weer anders geworden, nu subfolders voor talen
