Inventarisatie vragen/thema's Expert Forum Auto en Motor

Bericht door www.gps.nl »

Beste GPS-vrienden.

let op

Hello,

I am a Quest 1 user, which is very happy with the versatility of the unit: it is small, can be used on-road and off-road, is very configurable and pretty rugged. It has just enough memory (but I would like more...), but lacks custom POI's.

As a Quest user I find it hard to choose a successor, since Garmin seems to follow two marketing/production paths these days: one for the easy to use on-road navigators (Nuvi, I- and C- series) and one for the more configurable off-road navigators (eTrex-, 60-, 76- series, 278). The only GPS that has a bit of both worlds (the Zumo) tends to be on the easy-to-use side, lacking configurability. It looks like Garmin is going for mostly easy to use models, which then seem to miss out on the level of configurability.

Is this what we can expect from Garmin in the future? Or can we still have hope to see a navigator that could be the Quest 3 (essentially a Quest 2 with enough power to make it work like a charm) or a Zumo 9xx (a Zumo 550 with more datafields and more configuration menus)?

As an experienced user, I really like the expert-forum idea and I am very pleased Garmin is cooperating on this special occasion! :D And I see more and more companies using experienced users for testing ideas, testing prototypes and more (like the Microsoft MSDN platform as an exampe).

Wouldn't everybody benefit if Garmin made the expert forum a permanent way of communicating with it's (more experienced) customers? A (closed) forum where users could contribute idea's and where Garmin could ask users if a would-be feature would make a difference in everyday life? Or even Garmin making beta versions of hardware and/or software available to experienced users?

At the moment the only way of communicating with Garmin is to fill in a form or send an email if you think you found a bug and you hardly ever get a reply... In the earlier days (GPS V era) that was different, I remember submitting a bug and receiving a personal beta firmware to test if the bug was gone. That took the Garmin engineer(s) and myself only 4 personal firmware versions in less than a week to get it solved. :D

I know this would need NDA's and stuff, but all those things are manageble. ;)

Just 2 very simple questions:

1. Why is it, that we must work for half an hour on your website to make you send the 2008 OT (NT?) version of City Navigator Europe and why is it, some people get 2 dvd's (like i did) and other get no dvd at all? You could do better than that i suppose. Perhaps the solution could be sending the updates to Garmin Europe/Netherland or even Waypoint and let them sell the stuff? I really don't know how much this update costs Garmin, but i DO know that i'm gonna pay for it as a customer for bad procedures and management.

2. When can you at last make an update for 2610, 2620, 2720 and some other equipments that doesn't make the machine call for every viapoint on the track? It is very annoying to hear "Truus" make calls for a viapoint and 20 meters further there's a turn to the right or to the left. It's annoying anyway to hear Truus make loose calls. I just want to hear Truus whenever there's a change of direction ahead.
I know you made the softwarechanges for zumo users, but older users are really getting fed up with it.

Still (regardless the 2 questions mentioned above) you're the best on navigation for motorcycles.
garmin 2610 op RODE vfr vtec en zumo 660 op dezelfde motor.
Op het rechte stuk kan iedereen te hard. Het gaat om de bochten!

Another question:

The update procedure is getting better (a bit) every year, but the one thing that is still not as good as I would like is the way we get the DVD. I ordered the non-NT update DVD and actually got two of them. Some other got none. This is not the optimal outcome, I suppose. ;)

Since we are in the internet-days, why not make the DVD available as an ISO download. A Torrent would even be better, since it takes the burden of your internet connection, but I think you don;t want to loose control over who gets the DVD...

So, after ordering the update DVD (just like this time), why not give the customer the choice to 1) download it right now (and it will take x minutes, warning!) or b) have it sent to you by last centuries mail (that will take x weeks, thank you!). That way the customer gets the choice between fast and no physical disk or slow and a physical disk.

I would go for the download, since I always create an ISO from the DVD in the first place... I tend not to loose my computer, but do sometimes lose a DVD... 8)

And I think there are enough services available (akamai.net comes into mind, this is what Microsoft uses) that can handle the bandwidth. And if you give each user a unique download URL, you can keep track of who downloads what and expire the download after is is complete (and thus make sure only that user can download it).

Speaking as a motorbiker:
In the next update for the 278:
add an alarm for poi's like speedcams so that it can be heard by headset.
I'm not the first to start about this problem.

The connector for the 278 is a pain in the @ss. I'm using #3 allready.
Afbeelding
Make a foolproof (stronger) connector.

For future models: make the screen less scratchy. (I'll bring mine as an example.)

Don't send 2 dvd's to the same person when he only needs one. Like Elsinga I also recieved two City Navigator Europe 2008 dvd's.

What's Garmin view on the combination of GPSr and automotive routes created in a cardset in mapsource ?

I was very fond of the GPSr that took over the route I created in mapsource without recalculation (given the computer and the GPSr have the same cardsets). This was Garmin USP that made me choose for a Garmin unit.

Nowadays it's often impossible to send mapsource routes to the GPSr (90% of the Nuvi-range) and when it's possible 90% of the GPSr are recalculating the route, often mutilating the mapsource route.

Please consider having the possibility to send routes to all automotive GPSr and please provide a "do not recalculate route" option.

I would also appreciate a GPS VI model, I don't mind paying the price of 2 GPSr for one splendid GPSr that can be used on and off road.

I would like to know how we as user can get requested functions into the Zumo (like additional futures that should be supported by the hardware).

For example the new bluetooth protocol.

Mobile XT

I'd like to suggest a Zumo 950 model, which has the same features as the Zumo 550, plus:
- more settings configurable (like on the Quest or 278)
- widescreen (so we have more room for the datafields, see next line)
- 4 (or 5) user configurable datafields (like on the Quest or 2820)
- a little less bulky (no custom caps, which take up space...)
- AD2P Bluetooth protocol, for wireless stereo high quality MP3
- no recalculation of imported routes, if the mapset is the same as the one used to create a route (like on the Quest)
- built in TMC receiver
- worldwide routable basemap (like the Colorado)
- higher screen resolution (like the Colorado or 278)

This would be a GPS that would be perfect for me, a real Quest or GPS V successor. ;)

Please consider creating a Colorado x00x unit as a Colorado 300 but with
- longer life on batteries
- possibility to disable route-recalculation when routes are transferred from mapsource
- 4 datafields, data to be chosen by the user
- TMC-ready
- bluetooth-ready
- GPS V alike display possibility to display the screen in portrait or landscape format
- X GB free internal memory
- dynamics: 6g

Don't mind to ask a higher price for this unit (or for the suggested Zumo 950). It's like having and selling a top-of-the-market unit. Just like BMW's M6 who's a reference and a marketing image but the BMW 3's make the money for the company.

Mapsource

Is it possible that development focuses on a much more user friendly version of Mapsource? The current GUI is not user friendly for beginners. It is not intuitive to use at all (in fact you almost need a course to work with it)

1) Important, often used routing settings are hidden behind different menus (like the setting for shortest time /avoidences etc).
2) You can not load more then one saved route in mapsource window. You need to open up more versions of mapsource and use windows cut & paste to get multiple routes into your GPS
3) It is very difficult (for beginners) to shorten or lengthen (or cut) a single route. The route tools should be expanded with simple cutting and pasting tools just like the track tools.

Last and most important:
Mapsource files has become the standard of sharing routes over the internet. Would it not be possible that, when sharing the route, all routing settings are saved and loaded when exporting / sharing a route over the internet!!!

Even more ideal: Why do none of your GPS units have the exact same settings options as Mapsource?????

For the Zumo

* Better volume control for Bluetooth, The knops doesn’t function.
I have to go into the menu to control the volume, wile driving a bike.

* Maybe it's an idear to control the volume with noise recognition.

* Stereo or surround sound (AD2P protocol)

* Wide screen high-resolution an 3D map display.

* Voice response for the most common commands. Shuts as :
1.Vollum up/down 2.Zoom in/out 3.Next event (right bottom in the
screen) 4. Go to....

* Map support for Greece. (asked by may frend ho is going to move that way)
