Zumo
Dead Zumo syndrome

From the very beginning the Zumo series suffers from an unknown percentage of units going dead.
This presents itself in two ways:
1) Turning itself off while riding > Starting it up in a normal way usually fixes that
2) Going dead and staying dead, no matter what buttons are pushed > Often taking the units battery out fixes that. But not with all units!

The list of Zumo's that went dead is (in various threads around the world) very very long. On the plus [+] side, all such warranty claims have been perfectly dealt with by Garmin & their shops (usually by replacing the entire unit). Some persons had their Zumo replaced by this for the fourth time!

But; So far Garmin has never solved this in any firmware solution, or even pointed out what the cause of this problem is.

So my question is: Do you know what causes this problem, and do you have a permanent solution for it.

I would like to talk about the route calculation the Zumo uses.
When you drive a home made route, and drive trough a hair pin the zum recalculates automatic, although the zumo i programmed to ask the question.

Also it would be nice to have a custom screen with some programmable data fields ( like height, speed, time). Should be possible for your experianced programmers.

Ohh yeh, see below :P

Why does every Garmin device I know begins to recalculate a route whenever you drive in the opposite direction for a short while? I cannot see the interest of this annoying feature. While there are several possible reasons to return for a short distance: problems with a mate, you missed a petrol station, something fell off your bike, you paused at a parking lot where you have to drive in the opposite direction to leave the parking lot, etc. etc.

None of these situations is a cause for recalculation...

Although the Zumo is meant to serve with hand shoes on the motorbike, is not easy. The 4 buds left are too low and feel you with hand shoes hardly sit and therefore are serve them badly.

If there nevertheless Zumo must come 950 (idea from Elsinga and i like that :D ) then gladly with a set buds with the same functions as the Perfect Cradle of Waypoint like on the StreetPilot 26/27/28xx can be used. Or (Optional) as a remote control on the handle bar of the motorcycle. Wired and without batteries, IR or bluetooth. Maybe can this contain the amplifier :D

In the motorcycleholder must be build in an (regulable) amplifier for the sound because the sound with a cable to the helmet is now not loud enough.

Why has Garmin descended of the system routes and waypoints such as the StreetPilot import 26/27/28xx series? I find the current way a lot time-consuming. The StreetPilot 26/27/28xx series is immediately ready for use after sending the routes and waypoints.

POI Loader

New in Version 2.5.1 is the choices to select the destination of POI files to
* Garmin unit
* Mapsource (advanced)
* Custom folder (advanced)

When the option "Mapsource" is selected, this new .gpi file will be hidden into some windows folder.
But does nothing with this new POI file! The file can not be imported into Mapsource.

Why is there a function of selecting the POI output to Mapsource, if Mapsource does not see or is not using the POI file???

I'll try to pay a small contribution to this subject as well. So, here's my personal list of wishes for the current GPSMap 60CSx and for it's eventual successor which will probably appear one day sooner or later.

GPSMap60CSx:
1. Extend the present options for saved tracks in memory to the tracks saved on the mSD card.
2. Upon switch-on: restore the last used modus. Often I switch on the GPS_r to do something that does not require GPS reception.
3. Restore the speed filter function (present in the marine options of the 60CS model).
4. Trip computer's elevation-field: switchable between data from sensor and GPS heights.
5. More detailed selection of preferred roads (more levels). Present 'avoid highways' option does not satisfactorily function in Europe as it includes major roads as well.
6. Restore communication with nRoute in such a way that driving a route in simulation mode on the GPS_r is monitored in nRoute; as the 60CS did.
7. When the 'pop-up' screen is activated; switch on the backlight at automatic or prompted recalculations and when reaching the destination, just as this already functions for turn indications.
8. Add an option to edit and retrieve customs-POI text from the GPS_receiver; similar as it exists for WayPoints.

Generally the 60CSx is a marvellous product and it will take qualified people to design a model that would even exceed it's performance.

Successor:
1. To be developed into the direction of pure navigation; no 3D, games, music, pic-views etc.
2. Must have the same functionality and ruggedness as the present 60-series at the least; e.g. the present Colorado is missing important features of the 60-series.
3. Magnetic (electronic) compass to function as well when the unit is tilted.
4. Easy operation by left hand and when wearing gloves; for convenient manipulation on motorcycles.
5. Much better basemap; routable world-wide basemap with many place names and including terrain aspects such as forests, mountains and water/rivers. No poi-symbols included, or at the least a no-show option. I refer to the very annoying highway 'exit' symbols on the 60's basemap.
6. Maintain replaceable standard memory cards.
7. Storage compartment for spare memory card within the GPS-unit.
8. Maintain use of replaceable standard batteries (1.5V) and/or accu's (1.2V).
9. Options to create routes from map-screen; equal or better than present 60-series.
10. Construct the housing in such a way that the screen cannot touch a table's surface when GPS_r is laid 'face down'.
11. Maximize screen size, using the same bright reflective screen type as the present 60-series, or better.
12. Create an option to calculate 'scenic routes' from relevant (selectable) map parameters.
13. Introduce an option to automatically start the 'next route' when reaching destination, e.g. 01=routeA, 02=routeB, etc.
14. Avoid initial route recalculation for imported routes from identical map material, or provide an option to import routes from MapSource as tracks (probably this is a MapSource export function?).
15. Include wireless transfer of routes (and/or waypoints, tracks) between GPS_receivers.
16. Provide flexible customer profiles settings.

When additional points come to my mind I will add these at a later time.

Please adjust MapSource so it will zoom in and out with the scroll wheel of a mouse, like many other map programs do.

Things are converging, especially navigation and communication. Garmin is bringing us the Nuvifoon and Mobile XT as an example.

Will this cenvergence bring other things together? If so, could you give us examples of what lies ahead i9n the (distant) future?

Zumo & Mapsource:

Why doesn't Mapsource know how to get the routes and waypoint in the Zumo and do we have to import them seperatly.

Both are garmin products

In general:

a lot of users have in-depth questions about their GPS, like "how do I create a set of custom POI's split into different categories" or "My Quest shows LOADER LOADING and doesn't work any more, how can I solve this?" and other stuff not in any manual. Here at the forum, they share the things they discovered themselves, but this is less than optimal.

Is there a way for the dealer to ask these kind of questions to Garmin and relay the answer? Can the dealer (or a number of qualified dealers) get access to the official buglists and (complete!) release notes, so they can inform us of bugs already know to Garmin and things you fixed/altered in the newest firmware update?

That would take away a lot of guessing and rumours. ;)

To continue on ELSINGA's thoughts (shared with mine) :

Id would be very nice if Garmin started a support forum of their own. Monitored by skilled & enthusiast Garmin people, solving real time problems .... in real time :D

Garmin will find that a forum like this will get help from enthousiast users like Elsinga & me, aiding in answering daily problems.
As a matter of fact, I already feel like I am an unplayed, volunteered, helpdesk "unofficial" (but I seem to like it).

The very big advantage of a forum run by Garmin intself would be in the fact that user know that
a) bugs and issues are guaranteed to be posted directly where they belong
b) More complex issues, can go beyond "wild guessing" and real facts can be given by (Garmin) people knowing the facts.

So if anything comes out of this meeting: THIS would be THE major present Garmin Europe can give to this GPS world.

elsinga schreef:Since we are in the internet-days, why not make the DVD available as an ISO download.
If I read a Garmin GPS related mailinglist (GarminGPSpublic ed yahoogroups.com) correctly, the City Navigator US 2009 update is now available for download:
Bob Monahan (on the malinglist) schreef:For those of you with dialup you'll need to order the disk which comes with a $10 shipping fee.

For those of you with broadband connections you're probably in for the biggest download ever.

It's a whopping 2gb and on my DSL connection is projected to take 8 hours but they use "Download Manager" so it can quietly work in the background and will resume after you turn your computer off.
I hope things go well enough to continue that procedure. :D

Gpsmap 276C

Bericht door BlackstromNL »

I would like to suggest to update the Gpsmap 276C with:
- Custom POIs (ability to add additional points of interest);
- Bluetooth® wireless technology: to transfer route's, waypoints, tracks and maps from Mapsource to Unit and vice versa;
- Anti-theft feature: when you turn on your gps you have to enter a 4 digit code to unlock the unit (same setup as for cell phones);

i have got 2 questions/remarks (bold lettertype) :

There are roads which are closed (always, weekends or at night) for motorbikes , trucks or all vehicles. This will occur more often in future, for instance as governments want to excluse (heavy) traffic from small roads, which are mainly there because a gps unit directs them the when they want to avoid traffic congestion of governments want motorbikes off some roads due to disturbance/hazards which these motorbikes give.

As far as i know, these (sometimes) closed roads are not mentioned in the City Navigator software. *which is especially akward in not known area's, for instance when you're on holiday.
Can these (sometimes) vehicle-dependable (sometimes) closed roads be mentioned in the City navigator waypoint-database or something like that (just like restaurants/petrol stations for instance), so these roads are labeled with a specific sign such as for instance a motorbike with a red cross over it. And while checking / making a route in CN, when jou put the mouse on it, you can see the details such as for which vehicles and when (always, weekends or at night, for instance), and take this into consideration.

Next step would then be an alert in the gps-unit (such as a Zumo) to indicate these closed roads for some vehicles, when this road is entered or part of a route.

If the vehicle option "car/motorbike" is split in either "car" or "motorbike" in CN on the PC (mapsource) as on the GPS-unit, the alerts can be much more specific offcourse.

And with this vehicle-split, it should also be better possible to maintain an separate average speed table for car as motorbike (and other vehicle options (cycling, pedestrian, etc), for as far this is not already working)
(since for instance a Zumo "knows" when it is in a motorbike or carholder (hence fuel-supply option) is does not seems to hard to program this).
So Even without the suggested vehicle split, a separate average speed table should be possible due to his motorbikeholder-sensor.
(as example, in my car i drive at much slower speeds than on my motorbike, so now as well in my car as on my motorbike i do not get correct arrival times :roll: )
